Maps: Landranger 170 Pathfinder 1164 Start Point: GR 060 766
A rural walk of about 7 kilometres (4 miles) which is not strenuous but does have some difficult stiles. Also can be very muddy in places with a little barbed wire fencing to negotiate.
Getting there from Cardiff:
by bus: No. 32 from Central Station to the Red Lion, Pendoylan
by car: out of Cardiff on A48, Cowbridge Road, through Ely to Sycamore Cross. Turn right onto minor road, opposite the A4226 left turning to Barry. The village of Pendoylan is 3 kilometres along this road. Parking is available in the car park of the Red Lion lnn or on road in front of church.
Starting from the Red Lion turn right out of the car park to reach the church. Cross the road and immediately opposite the church join a footpath to the right of a house going up the slope to reach the first stile. Straight across rising field to stile. Cross to stile in opposite right hand corner. Down hill to field gate opposite. Walk up hill keeping hedge on right to field gate in top corner. Now keeping hedge/bank on left continue up hill to stile and kissing gate to join lane.
Turn left onto lane and continue to cross-roads. Straight across to reach Warren Mill Farm Park on right. (The Park offers plenty of parking, a small fishing lake, farm animals, old farm equipment and a picnic site with snack kiosk).
Continue on road past lake and turn immediately right on to a bridle path rising past a white house up to Warren Farm. Continue with farm buildings on left through gate into large undulating field. Cross, bearing a little left to enter forest through metal gate. Follow forestry track to junction with main forest roadway and lane at Forester's house.
Fork left to join forest roadway at metal barrier adjacent to house. With house on left fork immediately left at Y-junction following rising roadway. Reaching the turning circle at the end of the roadway keep straight on following a very muddy track for 80 metres until reaching lane.
Turn right immediately crossing another lane. Continuing on lane with house on left ignore the first roadway on right hand side back into Hensol Forest. Enter the forest at second right hand roadway and continue down to end. The track continues briefly into trees going down an overgrown slope, across boggy land to a fence, adjacent to Cwm Farm.
Proceed down slope with hedge on left crossing through barbed wire fence into next field. Continue down the slope to a field gate in the opposite right hand corner. Then keep on down the slope passing an earthwork on the right to reach a field gate in opposite left hand corner.
Exit field turning left to follow the left hand side edge of sunken trackway to reach lane in 80 metres. Enter lane across small fence and turn right going down hill into village of Tre-Dodridge. At T-junction turn briefly right before turning left up short driveway to reach a stile. Enter field climbing up hill, keeping wall on left, to reach a field gate,
Keeping hedge to right continue round corner of field to reach stile in next corner. Cross stile, heading 45 degrees left towards the TV mast at St. Lythans. Exit this field through a large open gateway continuing downhill with hedge on left to reach stile just short of corner in field. Cross stile and field to stile immediately opposite where you join road. Turn right along road into Pendoylan village, passing church on left, to return to starting point.
