Maps: Landranger 171 Pathfinder 1148 Start Point GR 125832
A moderately strenuous walk of 18 kilometres (11 miles) over the Garth and Craig yr Allt mountains.
Getting there from Cardiff:
by train: from Cardiff Central or Queen Street to Taffs Well station.
by bus: no. 26 from Central Station.
by car: out of Cardiff through Whitchurch on the A470, then off at Tongwynlais onto the A 4054 to car park at Taffs Well railway station.
Cross the railway by footbridge, go over main road (by zebra crossing) and then over River Taff by accommodation bridge. Carry on past rugby pitch to road (Radyr to Pentyrch) where turn right and take road up to Gwaelod y Garth passing the village name board on your left.
Walk along the road into trees, pass small road off to left and track to garages etc. on right, start to walk uphill and take signposted path into woods on left opposite concrete-posted fence.
Quite a steep climb in the woodland for about 1 kilometre reaching gate into field. Cross field to second kissing gate giving onto road where you turn left. Follow road for about 2 kilometres to track / road on right leading onto Garth Hill.
Walk along track with cottages on left and proceed to trig point at 1007 ft., return to track, well worn by tractors, and continue generally northwards to gate.
Go through gate and walk through fields down to derelict farm buildings and eventually a tarmac road which you follow to junction and turn right walking short distance to second junction where you turn left. Keep on road still heading downhill and north.
Walk for 2 kilometres to Y-fork where you branch right and walk down under railway bridge to meet main road where you turn left. Walk through industrial estate and cross River Taff by road bridge, staying on right side to huge roundabout and walk around anticlockwise, passing under A470.
Climb grassy bank on to road turning right with Griffin Mill garage on left, now heading eastwards and follow country road to Taff Trail which is a disused railway. Continue eastwards for 2 kilometres under bridge and through gate, then into a small council estate on Caerphilly road, below aircraft engine factory. Cross main road at traffic signals following Taff Trail signs.
Walk along tarmac path and under another bridge and continue to gate. At gate fork left and walk along road bearing left uphill along tarmac footway. Walk under pipeline and find wooden gate on left marked Ridgeway and walk through gate onto hillside following path up to TV transmitter. Walk onto hill (Craig yr Alit) and proceed along ridge to eastern end and take stile or gates leading down to tarmac road which you follow to main road where you turn right.
Walk quite steep main road to junction with pub (Black Cock). With back to pub a stile is seen which leads to a golf course. Over stile, turn right and follow fence running back parallel with the road. The path swings left and white arrows appear here and there to guide.
Follow path running south-west through woodlands with stream (Nant y Brynau) close at hand on right. Walk down to gate with stile; cross and keep straight on (not left) with stream on left.
Walk through field, swinging left to gate near farm. Through gate and then turn right going under old railway bridge into housing estate at Ty Rhiw. Follow road to right and walk down to T-junction, Turn left and walk along West View through estate to bridge over dual carriageway, A470. At main road turn right and then first right down to station car park.
