Maps: Landranger 171   Pathfinder 1180   Start Point GR 179692

An easy, circular walk of 10 kilometres (6 miles) taking in part of Cosmeston Lakes Country Park, the coastal path and the cliff top walk in Penarth.

Getting there from Cardiff:

by bus: from the Hayes or Central Station, P4, P5 or P8 Service to Cosmeston Lakes Country Park.

bv car: on the A48 to Canton; then A4055 on road signposted "Penarth"; at traffic lights in Lower Penarth take Sully road, B426 7 which leads you to Cosmeston Lakes Country Park.

From Cosmeston car park begin to walk anti-clockwise around the first lake. Just after half-way round go left on to prominent track which leads over bridge between lakes and passes, (it will be on your left) the mediaeval village now interestingly re-created. Ignore side paths, unless you want to visit the village, and continue to B4267, Penarth - Sully road.

Cross the road and take St. Mary's Well Bay road immediately opposite. The pavement is at first on the left, then on the right. Continue on road, past the Bay Caravan Park, past entrance to Golden Hind public house car park and then, on left hand side of the road, go through gap in crash barrier and old gateway to join coastal path.

Follow this path downwards, ignore the track on right going down to beach, and continue straight ahead, walking between caravans and cliff edge. Follow this cliff edge path upwards where paths junction and keep to it, keeping old concrete pill-box on your left. Further along it becomes a concrete track which, after passing an old wartime building, reverts to a path keeping to left of chalet park and on to road.

Go right along road towards Lavernock point, passing Marconi memorial plaque on church wall. After the church pass old farm buildings and then go left to rejoin coastal path. Follow this path for nearly 2 kilometres. It then becomes the promenade area at Lower Penarth.

Walk along this promenade for about one kilometre, passing a putting green and a cafe. The path now starts to descend and at a triangular green with sheltered seating, turn left and cross the road. Go left again on far pavement until in 40 metres you come to a mini roundabout; cross into Alberta Road.

Walk through Alberta Road and continuation Alberta Place. At the end of the Place go sharply left on to a path following route of old railway. Keep to path for about one kilometre where it then becomes built up Rowan Close. Walk through the Close, keeping to the right. After 100 metres regain path and keep to this for a little under one kilometre. Where Cosmeston Drive crosses path go right along the Drive to the B4267; cross to regain starting point. The Cosmeston Lakes Country Park has an interesting visitors centre and a pleasant little cafe.
