Cardiff Ramblers

WALKS PROGRAMME: We no longer post a printed programme to members. Please see the Walks Programme page for the latest walks programme.

We encourage everyone to come and join us for a walk. Get fresh air, exercise and meet people while enjoying the peace of the countryside or exploring the lesser-known partss of our city. Non-members are welcome to come on a few sample walks before (hopefully) deciding to join. You will always be made welcome. The Walks Programme is on this site, just chose a suitable walk and give it a try.

Join a walk If you haven't walked with us before, please ring the leader beforehand. Bring a packed lunch and enough to drink. Most importantly, wear appropriate clothing for the weather - especially footwear, as Wales is known for being wet and muddy, and boggy ground often cannot be avoided. Allow about half an hour for each mile walked - e.g. a 6-mile walk should last about 3 hours, plus travel time to the start and back.

Please carry "In Case of Emergency" information – this might be on a card, key fob or on your smartphone. Give contact details for use in emergency as we may well not know where you are from or who to contact.

Our programme of guided walks varies from shorter strolls, mainly on the streets of Cardiff, through country rambles to longer hikes in the hills and mountains further afield. We  have walks on Wednesdays, Thursday evenings, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, so you should find a convenient time.

Also see the official Ramblers Information for Walkers.

Join the Ramblers The Ramblers is a national organisation - you can join up at:https://www.ramblers.org.uk/get-involved/join-the-ramblers.aspx. Joining allows you to walk with any local group in the country. If our location isn't convenient, neighbouring groups in our area include: Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan, Taff-Ely and South Gwent. Also Tiger Bay Ramblers cover the area for younger members.

PLEASE NOTE
Please make sure that you're fit enough to undertake the walk you intend to join. If you are unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first: it's much better to find a walk a little too slow and easy than to make yourself miserable and exhausted.
Most Ramblers' walks are off-road in rural areas. Please have suitable footwear and clothing for the walk you intend to join, and bring some food and drink, even if the walk includes a pub or cafe break. Leaders may refuse to accept participant(s) who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit and for whom the walk is unsuitable. When in doubt, contact the organisers or the walk leader in advance.

For your own and others' safety please read and abide by any advice and guidelines issued by the organisers, and the instructions of the walk leader. Though walking is inherently one of the safest outdoor activities, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents to occur.

Further Information

REFRESHMENTS Bring enough food and drink for coffee, lunch and tea breaks on full day walks.

TRANSPORT COSTS Our Group encourages car sharing. Drivers often appreciate it when a voluntary contribution is made by passengers. As a guide, 10p per mile per passenger is considered an amount which reasonably covers the costs incurred by the driver.

DOGS may be allowed by prior arrangement with the leader. When allowed, they must be under close control and on a lead through farmyards and fields containing animals. Guide dogs are welcome, but please check the suitability of the walk with the leader in advance. Ramblers Civil Liability Insurance does not cover incidents involving dogs and owners must take responsibility for their dogs.

LARGE GROUPS For reasons of safety and enjoyment, large attendance at any walk may result in changes to the published programme.

CHILDREN Walkers must be 18+ or accompanied by an adult holding parental responsibility. Contact Committee Member to discuss.

ACCIDENTS Incidents where outside assistance is required or where someone is injured and needs first aid/medical treatment (beyond just a plaster or antiseptic wipe) that occur on a Group walk must be reported to the walk leader, who must report the incident to our Group Secretary for inclusion in our Accident Book.

Walk Grades

Ramblers have a standardised grading system. The following is copied from the Ramblers web site:

Easy: Walks for anyone who does not have a mobility difficulty, a specific health problem or is seriously unfit. Suitable for pushchairs if they can be lifted over occasional obstructions. Comfortable shoes or trainers can be worn.

Leisurely: Walks for reasonably fit people with at least a little country walking experience. May include unsurfaced rural paths. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are recommended.

Moderate: Walks for people with country walking experience and a good level of fitness. May include some steep paths and open country and may be at a brisk pace. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are essential.

Strenuous: Walks for experienced country walkers with an above average fitness level. May include hills and rough country and may be at a brisk pace. Walking boots and warm, waterproof clothing are essential. People in doubt about their fitness should contact the organiser or leader in advance.

Our group uses our own system, based on the amount of climb involved:

D - <500ft (150m) of ascent;

C - 500-1200ft (150-350m) of ascent;

B - 1200-2000ft (350-600m) of ascent;

A - over 2000ft (600m),

A+ over 3000ft (900m) of ascent.
