A conversation on a recent ramble got me thinking about how long the Cardiff Ramblers website has been in existence. I started it in the late 1990's, little thinking that almost 30 years later I might be wishing that I'd kept more evidence of how it used to be.
Back then the millennium bug was the big thing, along with press stories of how the new "information superhighway" was going to revolutionise our lives. Websites were generally simple pages of information connected to other pages by clicking a link. The idea of linked pages gave rise to the concept of a "world wide web" of linked information. Cardiff Ramblers' website did just that - I believe that in its early days our site had more pages than the national Ramblers one. However, it avoided photographs, as they could each take minutes to download on a dial-up connection. The screen size was a standard 640x480 pixels which was standard for most computer screens, although now it seems somewhat cramped.
After we all survived into the new Millennium the nation was hit by the outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease in farm animals, effectively preventing us from rambling almost anywhere outside of the city. My earliest screenshot is from late in the year 2001 - notifying that we were finally returning to normal.

By 2006 download speeds were increasing and the site has a more modern appearance, with photographs, and the screen size gradually crept upwards. However, the actual content is still much the same.

Early in the the year 2007, the free btinternet hosting was no longer available and the site moved to a paid hosting service from Streamline, at around £40 per annum. This included a new domain name of our own - www.cardifframblers.org.uk.
In 2012 there was a new "branding" exercise by the Ramblers so, not only did the logo change from the two green hills to a new stick and stone "R" symbol, but all groups were encouraged to adopt a similar layout, to provide some consistency around the country. At about the same time, we were able to cancel the subscription to Streamline and took up the free hosting provided by Ramblers-IT.

Finally, some time around 2020, the site management was becoming time-consuming and so was all moved over to a more manageable Joomla framework, provided by Ramblers-IT. This resulted in another change of appearance, much more standardised with the numerous other Joomla sites. I don't have any early shots, before a second Ramblers re-branding in 2022, but apart from the branding change it has remained much the same until the present time.
